Gekko & Fox reads the market every Sunday: a state for the S&P 500, eleven sectors and the layers of the AI stack, computed by a published method. How it works
AI hardware breaks down while staples and health care take the lead
The market's structural state has slipped into Risk-Off at −27, and AI hardware is where it broke. Defensives took the bid, and health care holds the only Risk-On read on the board.
S&P 500
Tactical (next 2–6 w)
Structural (next 3–9 m)
Three things to know
- 01The structural state fell 13 points to −27, Risk-Off and its lowest in 26 weeks, with structural breadth at −49 doing most of the damage.
- 02AI hardware led the board lower: networking tactical fell 40 points to −37, the largest drop on the board, and semis, memory, networking and data centers all sit at their lowest structural readings in 30 weeks.
- 03Defensives took the bid: staples tactical rose 34 points to +18, its highest in 30 weeks, and health care structural at +37 is the only Risk-On read on the board.
The S&P 500
Structural state at −27, its lowest in 26 weeks
Positioning is contrarian: a positive score means leveraged funds are more short, or less long, of S&P 500 futures than usual, which the method reads as supportive. A negative score is crowded longs.
The two horizons read the same market through different sub-metrics, so one week gives two sets of components. Tactical trend is price against the 50-day average, structural against the 200-day; tactical relative strength is the 1- and 3-month return, structural the 6-month; breadth is the share of S&P 500 members above their 50-day average (tactical) or 200-day (structural). Momentum quality and positioning are tactical only. Weights: tactical trend 25, relative strength 30, breadth 15, momentum 10, liquidity 15, positioning 10; structural trend 25, relative strength 30, breadth 20, liquidity 25. Every sub-metric is scored against its own trailing distribution, clipped at ±2.5 standard deviations and scaled to ±100; a component is the mean of its sub-metrics.

The tape
Tactical −11 Balanced with conviction 90 at p23: breadth −21, trend −17, momentum −6, rs −9 and liquidity −32 all point down, and positioning at +39 is the lone support, reflecting funds net short 21.1% against a 17.2% mean. Structural −27 Risk-Off with conviction 100 at p13, lowest in 26 weeks, led by breadth at −49.
The story
Investors are weighing expected Q3 blended earnings growth near 29.5% [3] against 3.7% CPI [1] and a 5.09% 10-year [14], and took comfort from Fed signals that an October hike is not urgent [2].
The gap
The earnings story is broad; the tape is narrow, with structural breadth at −49 saying fewer stocks are participating than a 29.5% growth quarter implies.

No note on this sector in this issue.
Note
Structural +37 is the only Risk-On read on the board, at p98 of 30 weeks on rs +71 and breadth +69. Tactical +20 after a 16-point gain puts it at the edge of Risk-On on that horizon too.

Spenders lift capex while four hardware layers hit 30-week lows
A cross-cut of the market, not a sector: eight layers of the AI economy in dependency order, each an equal-weight basket of US-listed names drawn from across the index and beyond it. The order is the chain, so it is never sorted.

The gap
Spending plans rose in the week to 16 Oct while structural rs sits at −22; the market is not paying the spenders for their capex, though it is punishing them far less than their suppliers.
The tape
Tactical −2 Balanced, lowest in 8 weeks, with low conviction of 40: trend +2 and rs +6 offset breadth −14 and momentum −7. Structural −16 Balanced at p63, lowest in 10 weeks, with rs −22 and trend −14.
The story
The capex cycle is still accelerating, with hyperscaler spending near $800 billion [9] and Oracle raising its plans [4], and Meta is moving to charge for AI directly through a Muse Wonder subscription [5].

Tactical
Structural
The gap
The demand story is intact while the tactical tape has broken; structural trend at +17 is the last component still siding with the story.
The tape
Tactical −25 Risk-Off after a 30-point fall, at p7 and lowest in 10 weeks: breadth −66, momentum −36, rs −29, trend −13. Structural −10 Balanced with conviction only 45, lowest in 26 weeks, held up by trend +17 against breadth −33.
The story
Demand is not in question: TSMC calls AI demand extremely robust [12]. The cost of the inputs is, with HBM4 near $2.00 per gigabit and forecasts of $4.00-5.00 in 2027 [6].

The gap
TSMC's demand call says spending holds; the structural tape at its weakest in 30 weeks sides with the financing worry.

The story
Investors are reassessing supply-chain valuations against high borrowing costs and the risk that tighter credit slows hyperscaler spending [8], even as TSMC holds its $60-64 billion budget [12].
Memory & Storage
Tactical
Structural
The gap
The widest gap on the stack: prices are rising while the structural state sits at its lowest in 30 weeks. The tape is pricing either a cycle peak or a financing-led capex slowdown, and the board does not say which.

The story
The pricing cycle is strong: HBM3E contracts at $1.50-1.60 per gigabit, HBM4 near $2.00 [6], conventional DRAM forecast up 10-15% and NAND 15-20% in Q4, and DDR4 up 24% over three months [7].

The story
Networking is treated as the layer most exposed to debt-funded capex [9], even though Meta names networking equipment in its $130-145 billion budget [10].

The story
The build-out is still growing, with Oracle's gross capex at $90-95 billion a year [4] and Microsoft spreading data-centre costs over a longer period [11], but it is financed by a liability stack above $4 trillion [9].

The week ahead
Open Mon–Fri, 9:30 AM–4:00 PM · no holidays
- Throughout US Treasury par yield curve. The 10-year fell 15 bp to 5.09% in the week to 16 Oct; whether it holds decides if the rate-sensitive lifts in utilities and real estate extend.
- Throughout Q3 earnings season continues. Expected blended growth near 29.5% is the story behind a tape with structural breadth at −49.
- Thu, Oct 22 US weekly initial jobless claims. A labour read ahead of the FOMC, with a market still weighing a hike after 3.7% CPI. After the close, Thu, Oct 22
- Fri, Oct 23 CFTC Commitments of Traders. Funds are net short 21.1% against a 17.2% mean; a cover would cut the +39 positioning support across every area. After the close, Fri, Oct 23
- Wed, Oct 28 FOMC decision at the end of the 27-28 October meeting. Warsh gave no signal; a hike would hit liquidity, already −32 tactical and −26 structural across the board.
Risk map
The Fed hikes on 28 October
CPI at 3.7% [1] and a non-committal chair [2] leave a hike live, which would land on a liquidity component already negative everywhere.
Capex financing tightens
Hyperscaler liabilities above $4 trillion [9] and a 5.09% 10-year make the build-out sensitive to credit; a pullback in issuance would hit the hardware layers already at 30-week lows.
Long yields reverse higher
The rate-sensitive gains in the week to 16 Oct came with a 15 bp fall in the 10-year [14]; a reversal would undo them first.
A short squeeze lifts hardware
Funds are net short 21.1% against a 17.2% mean, so a cover would hit the most oversold layers hardest and against the Risk-Off read.
