Chip stocks hit 82-week lows while software and defensives hold up

The market is Balanced, but the AI hardware complex is breaking down: semis' structural state sits at its lowest in 82 weeks while AI software and defensives gain ground.

Three things to know

  1. 01Semis' structural state is −59, the lowest in 82 weeks and one point from Strong Risk-Off, and every AI hardware layer from compute to power sits in tactical Risk-Off.
  2. 02AI Software is the exception: its structural state rose 13 points to +24, the 96th percentile of its history and one point short of Risk-On.
  3. 03The market itself is Balanced at −8 tactical and −22 structural, with the 10-year yield down 9bp to 5.00% into a Fed meeting where a hold is expected.

Positioning is contrarian: a positive score means leveraged funds are more short, or less long, of S&P 500 futures than usual, which the method reads as supportive. A negative score is crowded longs.

AAII Investor Sentiment Survey, week to Wed, Oct 21 (published Thu, Oct 22): 36.9% bullish, 17.3% neutral, 45.8% bearish — a bull–bear spread of −8.9 points, against AAII's long-run average of +6.0 (37.5% bullish, 31.5% bearish); −2.9 the week before. The tape

Tactical −8 (Δ+3, conviction 75, p23) is held up by breadth +15 and positioning +19, against trend −19, rs −15 and momentum −10. Leveraged funds are net short 19.1% of open interest against a two-year mean of 17.2%, a contrarian support. Structural −22 (Δ+4, conviction 100, p22) is weak across the board, led by trend −33 and breadth −25.

The story

Investors appear to believe yields have peaked: the 10-year is nearly 38bp off its early-October high and the Fed is expected to hold, even though all 100 economists polled expect a December hike. Firm claims at 194,000 support the soft-landing reading despite 0.6% CPI.

The gap

The rate relief is in the bond market, not yet in the structural tape: trend −33 and breadth −25 have barely moved while yields fell.

Falling yields lifted defensives as AI hardware kept sliding

AI hardware slid again despite good news

Semis tactical fell 12 to −45 and its structural state reached −59, the lowest in 82 weeks; networking fell 10 to −47 and power fell 12 to −40. This came in a week when Arista raised its full-year revenue forecast to about $12.6 billion and Nvidia signed a $1.3 billion packaging deal with Amkor. The tape is ignoring supplier demand and pricing the question of who pays for it.6 12

Financing doubts at the data-centre end

CoreWeave's distressed bonds and Microsoft's termination of an Nscale site agreement put AI infrastructure economics under scrutiny, alongside Nvidia's up to $164.5 billion in data-centre guarantees. Data centers tactical fell to −45 and compute to −31, both the lowest in 78 weeks.7

Software gained on the agent push

AI Software structural rose 13 to +24 and tactical 9 to +2, as Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for about $5.66 billion, Oracle pledged $1 billion to AI partners and Microsoft moved Copilot to standalone sale from 1 December. The market is rewarding the companies selling agents, not the ones building the plant.8 9 10 13

Yields eased and rate-sensitive sectors rebounded

The 10-year closed at 5.00%, down 9bp on the week and nearly 38bp below its early-October peak of 5.3645%, while the 2-year fell 5bp to 4.69%. Real estate tactical rose 18 to −8 and utilities 16 to +9, with 94 of 100 economists expecting the Fed to hold at 3.75%-4.00% on 28 Oct.2 3 14

The AI stack

The market is buying AI software and selling AI hardware

A cross-cut of the market, not a sector: eight layers of the AI economy in dependency order, each an equal-weight basket of US-listed names drawn from across the index and beyond it. The order is the chain, so it is never sorted.

The gap

Supply-chain commitments say multi-year demand; the tape says the weakest semis reading in the board's history.

The tape

Tactical −45 (Δ-12, p6, lowest in 11 weeks) with breadth −73, momentum −49 and rs −69. Structural −59 (conviction 100) is at p0, the lowest in 82 weeks, with breadth −100 and trend −60. Positioning +19 is the only support.

The story

Capacity is being built: Nvidia's Amkor deal lifts advanced packaging capacity by over 300% by late 2028 and testing capacity doubles by 2027. Investors appear to doubt the end demand will pay for it.

What to watch

Semis sit one point from Strong Risk-Off at −59

Triggers closest to firing

The week ahead

Open Mon–Fri, 9:30 AM–4:00 PM · no holidays

  1. Throughout Semis structural state at −59, one point from Strong Risk-Off. The trigger nearest to firing; a further slip would put semis alongside networking and data centers in Strong Risk-Off.
  2. Tue, Oct 27 FOMC two-day meeting begins. Rate-sensitive sectors rebounded in the week to 23 Oct on easing yields; the meeting tests that move. After the close, Tue, Oct 27
  3. Wed, Oct 28 FOMC rate decision; 94 of 100 economists expect a hold at 3.75%-4.00%. Guidance on the December hike every economist polled expects will set the 10-year's direction and the market's liquidity component, at −15 tactical on Friday's close. After the close, Wed, Oct 28
  4. Thu, Oct 29 Weekly initial jobless claims. Claims at 194,000 are the strongest support for the soft-landing reading behind the market's improving tactical state. After the close, Thu, Oct 29
  5. Fri, Oct 30 Meta's new enterprise terms take effect, shifting AI model liability to customers. A test of whether hyperscaler monetisation moves the AI layer, down 10 to −12 tactical in the week to 23 Oct. After the close, Fri, Oct 30
