Gekko & Fox reads the market every Sunday: a state for the S&P 500, eleven sectors and the layers of the AI stack, computed by a published method. How it works
Money leaves AI spenders for defensives as the market holds Balanced
The market held Balanced at Friday's close while money moved out of AI spenders, software and communication into health care, staples and utilities. The AI & Hyperscalers structural state broke to −35, firing the Risk-Off trigger the issue of 25 Oct set.
S&P 500
Tactical (next 2–6 w)
Structural (next 3–9 m)
Three things to know
- 01AI & Hyperscalers' structural state fell 15 points to −35, its lowest in 13 weeks, firing the Risk-Off trigger the issue of 25 Oct set despite Microsoft Cloud revenue growing 30%.
- 02Six sectors hold Risk-On tactical reads (health care +45, staples +44, energy +36, materials +30, utilities +30, discretionary +25) while technology fell to −27, its lowest in 30 weeks.
- 03The market stays Balanced at tactical −7 and structural −24, with positioning at +30 and AAII bears at 41.4% against a 31.5% long-run average both reading as contrarian support.
The S&P 500
The market holds Balanced at −7 as money rotates beneath it
Positioning is contrarian: a positive score means leveraged funds are more short, or less long, of S&P 500 futures than usual, which the method reads as supportive. A negative score is crowded longs.
The two horizons read the same market through different sub-metrics, so one week gives two sets of components. Tactical trend is price against the 50-day average, structural against the 200-day; tactical relative strength is the 1- and 3-month return, structural the 6-month; breadth is the share of S&P 500 members above their 50-day average (tactical) or 200-day (structural). Momentum quality and positioning are tactical only. Weights: tactical trend 25, relative strength 30, breadth 15, momentum 10, liquidity 15, positioning 10; structural trend 25, relative strength 30, breadth 20, liquidity 25. Every sub-metric is scored against its own trailing distribution, clipped at ±2.5 standard deviations and scaled to ±100; a component is the mean of its sub-metrics.
The crowd
Bulls 37.8% · Neutral 20.7% · Bears 41.4% · spread −3.6· long-run average +6.0
AAII Investor Sentiment Survey, week to Wed, Oct 28 (published Thu, Oct 29): 37.8% bullish, 20.7% neutral, 41.4% bearish — a bull–bear spread of −3.6 points, against AAII's long-run average of +6.0 (37.5% bullish, 31.5% bearish); −8.9 the week before. AAII Investor Sentiment Survey — displayed, not scored.
The tape
Tactical −7 (p25 of 83w, conviction 60) splits cleanly: breadth +19, liquidity +8 and positioning +30 lean Risk-On, while trend −21, momentum −21 and relative strength −25 lean Risk-Off. Structural −24 carries conviction 100, with trend −40 and liquidity −19 doing the damage.
The story
Investors appear to believe the economy is strong (the Fed's "strong pace", EPS growth tracking 29.5%) but no longer want to pay for the largest technology names.
The gap
Breadth at +19 says the average stock is holding up while trend at −40 on the structural read says the cap-weighted index is not; strong earnings are rotating money, not lifting the market.

The gap
Microsoft Cloud grew 30% and beat on revenue, operating income and EPS, yet the layer fell; the tape is marking the funding bill, not the demand.

Triggers closest to firing
The week ahead
Open Mon–Fri, 9:30 AM–4:00 PM · no holidays
- Mon, Nov 2 Cipher Digital Q3 results before the open; Fabrinet fiscal Q1 results after the close. Tests data centers at the Strong Risk-Off line and networking's tactical read of −44. After the close, Mon, Nov 2
- Tue, Nov 3 Talen Energy Q3 results at 8:00 AM ET; Super Micro Computer and Astera Labs results after the close. Power sits two points short of its old −30 line; compute is at a 79-week tactical low.
- Tue, Nov 3 Federal Election Day. A policy event for a market whose rotation already favors health care and defensives.
- Wed, Nov 4 Datadog Q3 results before the open; Camtek Q3 results at 9:00 AM ET; ARM Holdings fiscal Q2 results after the close. Datadog reports into AI Software's 20-point tactical fall; Camtek and ARM test semis and compute.
- Wed, Nov 4 Treasury Quarterly Refunding Announcement. Sets supply at the long end with the 10-year at 4.94% and structural liquidity at −19.
- Thu, Nov 5 Core Scientific and MACOM before the open; Silicon Motion, Applied Optoelectronics, SoundHound AI and NuScale Power results. A dense day across five layers, including memory two points short of its old Strong Risk-Off line.
- Fri, Nov 6 Oklo Q3 results at 8:30 AM ET; Vistra Q3 results at 10:00 AM ET. Two Power members report as the layer posts its best tactical week in the stack, +8.
- Fri, Nov 6 Employment Situation Report for October. September payrolls rose only 29,000 with unemployment at 4.2%; with two FOMC hike dissents, the print bears on yields and the defensive rotation.
Risk map
A short-covering rally in AI hardware
Tactical reads already turned up in power, data centers, semis and networking, and positioning reads +30; a run of beats in the week ahead could lift layers with Risk-Off reads sharply.
The hike case returns to long yields
Two FOMC members voted for a hike and the 10-year closed at 4.94%; a hot payrolls print would hit rate-sensitive sectors and long-duration software.
The defensive bid reverses
Health care, staples and utilities sit at p91 to p95 of their tactical history; a growth-led rebound in technology would pull money back out.
Capex funding strain spreads
Meta is funding capex partly with equity; further raises across the spenders would extend the AI structural break into their suppliers.

Three of the 18 triggers set in the issue of 25 Oct fired, all Risk-Off: AI & Hyperscalers structural at −35 (11 past −24), the compute structural trend at −1, and AI Software tactical at −18 (8 past −10). The nearest misses were data centers' Risk-On line (structural −60, one short of −59), semis and memory Risk-Off (both −58, two short of −60) and power Risk-On (tactical −32, two short of −30). The fired triggers move the AI view from hardware weakness alone to weakness in the spenders and software too.
